What You Need to Know About COVID and Disabilities

Among the many serious questions being raised in regards to COVID-19 concerns, the rights workers have in regards to disability benefits. In addition to the severe symptoms and potentially long term side effects victims can suffer due to the illness, which often prevents them from performing their jobs, the pandemic is also having major impacts on people with other chronic health conditions. Being stuck at home and not getting the regular care and exercise they need increases the odds of long term disabilities.

COVID and Disability Benefits

Few of us could have foreseen the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there are still many questions regarding what will happen in the aftermath. Among these is the long term effects patients will likely suffer. To date, there are varying reports ranging from only the mildest side effects to issues that may result in long term disabilities. The Mayo Clinic warns that these may include:

  • Sensory impairments, such as impaired smell and vision;
  • Cognitive impairments, often referred to as ‘brain fog’;
  • Chronic fatigue, which leaves some COVID patient debilitated;
  • Muscle and joint pain, resulting in limited mobility;
  • Breathing problems, such as worsening asthma and COPD;
  • Failure of certain body organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.

In addition to questions about the long term impacts of COVID, there are also concerns over whether people at various stages of recovery may be entitled to disability benefits. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), employer-provided short term disability policies may help in the event that COVID symptoms and side effects prevent you from returning to work. As long term disability (LTD) coverage typically starts once the worker has been off the job for more than a year, whether patients are entitled to these benefits is something that will likely be discussed in the future.

Other Chronic Conditions Impacted by the Pandemic

For people with chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disorders, or kidney problems, COVID-19 is a double-edged sword. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that they are at an increased risk of suffering an adverse reaction if they do become infected. At the same time, lockdowns and a general desire to reduce their risks could cause them to avoid doctor offices and neglect healthy lifestyle habits. This could cause their condition to worsen, increasing the risk of long term disabilities.
